Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are excited to be at school and are eager to learn. They are from a small rural community in Texas, which is known for its agriculture and provides many hard-working families with jobs. About 85 percent of my students are from low-income families. We have a high population of ESL students, and many of their families do not speak English at home. Therefore, their vocabulary is limited. Despite the language barrier, our students work hard and have made great gains in their reading. Our school provides a safe and positive environment that encourages students to do their best and develop a love for reading. The elementary school has about 400 students from PreK to 3rd grade.
My Project
A document camera will display students' writing projects and creative ideas in a clear and effective way. My students will be able to use the document camera and present their research or ideas up on the big screen. Our current document camera is old and blurry. With a new document camera, students will be able to see clearly and learn from the presentations.
Opportunities for students to share their work provide motivation and communication experiences valuable to learning.
A document camera can be used for whole group instruction as well. We can clearly display a book as we read aloud, or it can be used to model a science experiment or show smaller items like math manipulatives on a large screen. Modeling step by step procedures and strategies for solving problems is something we do every day. There are endless ways a document camera will enhance my students' learning.
A set of markers would also help the students during group work be able to creatively write their ideas. Colors really brighten up learning and motivate my 3rd graders.
