I teach seventh grade math at a low wealth school. The introduction of the word "ALGEBRA" can be very scary for some students. The transitions from the concrete to the abstract can be difficult. Variables must be replaced and isolated! It is important for the teacher to guide every step at the beginning both to ensure accuracy and continue motivation. This is where student double sided dry erase boards, plain on one side and coordinate grid on the other, come in. Students can erase variables and replace them. They can erase expressions and replace them with simplified versions. When learning to balance equations, they can transition from the concrete algebra blocks to the "picture" modeling on a dry erase board. They can work easily with transformations on the coordinate plane. The possibilities are endless. In addition, dry erase boards can be used as a tool to check accuracy. Rather than ask one student to respond, all can write a response on the white board and hold it up for the teacher to see when given a cue. I am pleading for a classroom set of thirty of these dry erase boards, which included dry erase markers and mini erasers.
