Shoulder Rests For Middle School Violinists

My students need 25 shoulder rests to play comfortably, maintain healthy posture, and advance their skills.

We are an orchestra program in rural SC. Most of my students use school instruments to be involved in our orchestra program. My students are highly motivated and really want to do a good job, but are held back by inferior instruments and a lack of materials. Being a rural community means that most of my students' families don't have the money to spend on orchestra equipment. This year, we are attending a competition for the first time in nearly a decade and I would like for my students to have the opportunity to perform as well as any other school in the state. We are rebuilding a once-strong orchestra program and we need your help!

Our biggest obstacle is that most of my students use school supplied instruments. The instruments themselves are mostly OK, but the bigger challenge is enabling my violinists and violists to have proper posture by using a real shoulder rest. The majority of my students are on free/reduced lunch, meaning that they are also excused from paying the participation and supply fee. Therefore, I do not have the funds to supply shoulder rests for my students who use school instruments. Believe it or not, students can actually injure themselves by playing with incorrect posture. Also, the wood resting on their collarbones is painful!

All my students need are shoulder rests to be included in their school instrument outfit. There are so many intermediate and advanced techniques that my students are struggling with simply because they are incapable of maintaining the correct posture. It's like trying to build a house without a foundation. It's so simple, but so difficult!

With your help, my students will not only be able to advance their technique, but you may be what is standing between them and a severe injury. Also, you might be what makes the difference between a mediocre score and a terrific score at competition. My students really need this confidence boost and you can be a major part of that boost!
