The students in my classroom come from a variety of backgrounds, but one thing unites them- they have all been identified as gifted learners. Gifted learners experience education in a multitude of ways. My district allows me to teach these students and offer them opportunities to explore areas that interest them the most.
By allowing these unique students the time to develop their gifts, they have a higher overall satisfaction with school.
These students also learn how to manage time and plan for big outcomes (projects, presentations, etc).
My Project
Short story writer, George Saunders, wrote, "When you read a short story, you come out a little more aware and a little more in love with the world around you." I find this quote perfectly sums up why I share short stories with my middle school students. Not only do these stories allow for a compacted visit into story structure, but these stories also frequently stick with the reader long after the reading has ended.
A class set of 100 Great Short Stories will allow me to share dozens of delightful short stories in one volume with my advanced middle school readers.
We will be able to discuss themes that apply to their everyday lives while bringing stories written in the past to the modern classroom. With these novels, I will be able to bring authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Mark Twain, and many more talented writers into their repertoire.
