This year I am proud to be the team leader at my school. This means the world to me as this was my elementary school. As their coach/leader, I can experience so many of the different learning environments.
Seeing so many of my students every morning with the eagerness to learn has shown me that this has been the best professional decision I have made in my career.
I know that this year will be one for the record books not only for all the students and teachers but for me as well because we will work together as a village to make magic once again this year.
Our school is located in a low-economic neighborhood where about 90% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many come from broken homes that have been separated because of their dream to come to the United States or because of natural disasters. Some of the students in my school suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a Second Language), and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed.
My Project
As a school-wide program, teachers and students have had the opportunity to discuss the importance of earning, investing and saving. The students will have the opportunity to earn classroom money for things such as performing their class jobs, attending school on a daily basis, doing their homework, performing acts of kindness, and going above and beyond while meeting academic expectations. The school has set up individual classroom online banks in which time will be given to deposit and withdraw play money earned from their accounts. We will then establish a school store stocked and supplied with various supplies some requested. Every week, different classrooms will take turns running the store while others come to shop with the money they have earned. The students will use the money saved to purchase/invest in items such as pencils and snacks. The students will build their knowledge of financial literacy and strengthen their math skills by using the online bank accounts and mathematics manipulative. They will be able to view and manage their account information and keep a journal with financial data. This will definitely give our students the advantage for future endeavors. Students will also have different school-wide activities/assignments throughout the school year that support financial literacy.
