Our nation is woefully lacking skilled labor and employable high school graduates. While many of our students go onto college, many more are needed to go on to vocational and technical schools to fill more and more skilled positions in the trades.
Our students are great workers when they are in their element.
You aren't going to excite them much with English or math, but make them figure out some measurements, areas, or angles in the shop and they are much more likely to do well. This contextual learning keeps them engaged, helps them apply learning from other core classes, and provides them with skills they are going to need in the future in order to be productive, contributing members of society.
My Project
My students need a safe drill press in order to learn skills through building and marketing projects. Our students will run with more resources to use in their career and technical education classes. Being able to have more students work on more projects at the same time will be hugely beneficial to them, and they will get more time to get great work accomplished. More industrial tools being used safely by more students means much more learning is going to happen!
We need to serve these kids the best way we can and give them opportunities for the future.
Every student is not going to get a four-year bachelor degree. We don't need every student to so this. But we do need them to have a career goal and a plan for learning the skills they need to be successful in that occupation. We can do that for the students that the current educational reforms are missing if we can support them in their technical courses. This project will help do that.
