I am the new physical education teacher to over 400 students. These students come from a variety of economic backgrounds and are from various areas around Wilmington.
Our students not only vary in economic backgrounds but are ethnically diverse as well.
We also have a wide range of ages, as our school is K-8. As a physical education teacher, I often choose sports and games that appeal to a variety of cultures. I also enjoy teaching exercises that they will use as they get older and their bodies mature. When encouraging students to be physically active, it is important to do activities that are enjoyable. If students find the activities to be enjoyable, they are more likely to participate in these activities outside of school.
My Project
My middle schoolers need some new sports equipment. Middle school physical education is all about fitness and small-sided games.
Pickleball and Hockey are sports that fit many middle school physical education standards.
Students would benefit from the invasion tactics of hockey, as well as the net/wall tactics of pickleball. Students would not only learn tactics, but would use cooperation among teammates.
While learning these games, students would also use inquiry and higher level strategy. Through the model "Teaching Games for Understanding," students would be allowed to explore different scenarios and how to best act in certain situations.
This equipment would give my middle schoolers a much needed fresh new year in physical education!
Hurricane Florence swept through our area, impacting multiple families in our region and specifically in our school. We are a charter school, so we have students from all over the region. Some students lost everything. Having this new equipment would be a way to freshen up our current PE program and show students that other people do care about what are going through in recovering as a community.
