Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a recovery school for high school students in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. They are all involved with 12 step programs designed for teenagers. The day to day focus on remaining sober is paramount to their education.
This school is where education meets recovery.
My students have often been away from school for a long period of time and are not always motivated to learn when they enter our program. My goal is to provide them with materials that not only relate to their life experiences, but also engages their interest. Consider that their former "highs" from drug use often provide a difficult relative baseline of what avoiding boredom feels like. It is a constant challenge to find materials that they can relate to and that also engage their interest.
My Project
Marcie brings 29 years of experience working with young people. Her talent leadership will expose our learners to a unique art form. This project will connect topics from biology, environmental science, history, English and math. This is our second balloon madness project. We will employ the lessons we learned to improve our finished product.
The coral reef and shipwreck will come alive once we add the tropical fish and other marine life.
The mermaid will add a magical element to our final art creation. The experience will bring our school community together for a unique educational experience. Thank you for your generous support.
