This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are between age 11 and 13.
I teach at an inner-city middle school in Florida where 90% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch.
They have very little opportunities to see that they can be agents of change in their homes, community, and their neighborhood. Students perform better they know they are part of a team working towards the same goal.
My students have been competing in events this year but feel left out because all the other schools seem united because they were uniforms and team outfits. My students would benefit from feeling like they belong if they had professional uniforms on as well.
My Project
My students compete in district and state competitions in speech and debate events. When we travel to competitions, we need team blazers and dress shirts to look sharp and formal when we travel together.
Team uniforms are important for three reasons: Team identity, unity, and equality.
We need to be visually distinguished between competing teams. Having these blazers and shirts will make us truly feel like a part of a united group so that we can feel motivated to succeed. Most importantly, every member feels equal and important. There is a sense of professionalism that comes automatically when we travel in uniform.
