My Students

"Out of the Public School Grows The Greatness of the Nation," Mark Twain.

I teach at a lovely school, it's metropolitan and diverse-a classic public school melting pot scenario.

My school is a Refugee Resettlement community and our school is the lucky recipient of large numbers of these fine kids from Africa, Asia, and Europe. We're on the fringe of Title I support and one of the only schools that sports school uniforms with pride. Our students are overwhelmingly thoughtful, patient, and empathetic. This enthusiastic bunch badly needs funding for some books!

My Project

Ship Breaker is one of my favorite books to teach. We need more copies of Ship Breaker at SJH. This is a high interest dystopian thriller with excellent themes and real-world connections. Every year, a couple of books disappear. This has happened for the last eight years, so now we badly need replacements in order to have enough copies to check out to every student. Students read most of this book at home on their own time.

Having enough copies of this book will be great!
