This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a high trauma community, school is a rare place where young people are able to interact with peers and learn about friendship, communication, conflict resolution, and what it means to be an exemplar student and caring member of a community.

Our diverse kindergarten community is located in California, and represents the highly diverse community.

Our school has one of the highest ethnic diversity index scores of all elementary schools in the district. Multiple countries and languages are represented by our students and families, of which 35 percent qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Our school is committed to creating a space where our students can feel safe enough to open their minds and hearts to learning.

My Project

Every human is as unique as the stars in the sky. From the design of our bodies to the thoughts in our minds and the stories of our heart, no two people are identical. Unfortunately, learning spaces can be limiting in how they standardize language and structures - placing labels of "boys" and "girls", prioritizing thinking out problems over experiencing phenomena, emphasizing solutions and rightness over the journey of exploration.

This project will supplement our room with positive messages for growth mindset, provide materials from stories that challenge gender binaries to understanding number concepts through play, and create a system for celebrating every student's progress.

Our school community openly celebrates diverse families, PRIDE, and non-binary expression. We want more books that present non-binary characters as commonplace heroes. Books like When Aidan Became a Brother, Neither, The Magic Hat Shop, From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea will expand our library to represent our students.

With great diversity, we need to establish a strong foundation of connectedness, support, and community. Positive messaging through visuals about teamwork, values, growth mindset, and books like Find Your Happy! and I Can Do Hard Things will setup our students with skills to find inner strength and self-love.

We want to see our classroom as a cultural museum displaying our learning throughout the year. Folders with brads, labels, and a hole punch enable us to setup student work display areas.

Lastly, we want to promote equity through access to basic classroom materials so all students can participate. Primary journals and pencils, dry erase low profile clipboards allow for flexible mediums of expression and portability. A visual timer, school friendly playing cards, and balance monkey games offer non-traditional and differentiated options for diverse learners.
