Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us shift with the earth's plates and get hands on with science. These student do a fantasist job of studying the resources, but don't have a lot of opportunity to get there hands dirty and really understand the changes that are occurring.
My students are the ones you see walking home late after school, sad to have two weeks of vacation because they would rather be at school than home, struggling to get their work done, missing homework assignment because no one at home could help them, and discovering their own rules and boundaries.
These students attend an urban school, in a low income area with a unique diversity. We are a program improvement school that promises to offer a rigorous and equitable education. Our students come from various backgrounds and many different household types. Though we hold very high standards, the limited community support we have makes our materials and access to resources severely limited. With the help of a donor, we can begin living our education.
My Project
We are currently in a classroom that has a great opportunity for growth. When I arrived, we had no pencils, scissors, glue, or art and science supplies. Though we have been able to borrow from the school, there is a limited amount of resources that we can take. With supply boxes, scissors, pencils, and glue we can begin to use our resources more effectively and take ownership of our materials.
These resources, along with paint, science curriculum, and constructions paper, will enable us to create models, carry out experiments, and get hands on in our science curriculum. Your help is needed to enhance and inspire the students in a more enriching and motivated learning environment.
This project is so important for us, to be able to give each student their own supplies that they can use and hold responsibility for, each object with a safe place, and less class time wasted sharing scissors and glue sticks.
It will also give them the chance to see replicas of earth and the activity that occurs. Many of these students don't have this and are unlikely to see real life examples. These supplies will also help encourage fun, which is what a lot thrive for.
