My Students
I teach first grade in a low-income school district. The students vary in backgrounds, and I do have some students with special needs in my class this year. They are very eager to learn and enjoy lessons/activities that are engaging and hands on.
My students enjoy cooperative learning and working together during the school day.
There is such a wide range of abilities in this class, so it is important to provide materials that all levels can enjoy and learn from. It is amazing to see both social as well as academic growth during the first grade year!
My Project
Having a classroom CD player and a set of headphones will allow me to set up a quality listening station that I know the students will be able to independently maneuver.
Early readers benefit by listening to fluent readers.
They also need to stay engaged. Having a listening center in my classroom will help build fluency and comprehension as well as cooperation in a small group. Using a listening center also prepares students to be independent readers and enjoy a variety of texts. I plan on using both fiction and nonfiction books that reach across all content areas in the 1st grade curriculum.
