Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

On March 6th, I gave my last hug to a student and said, "Have a great track-out! Read something, even if it's a cereal box! Read, sleep, and repeat. I'll see you in two weeks!" What we didn't know was that during those two weeks, our world would change in a way that has simply been unprecedented.

Amazing, dedicated, indescribably resilient are the words I use to describe my students.

Everyone is going through a difficult time but kids, students have lost more than many realize. A sense of routine, normalcy, socio-emotional skills that schools can provide, are currently at a standstill. With school buildings being closed and public libraries being closed, how can students who love to read, read? Not having access to written literature is one of the many issues we are facing.

My Project

One of the many great things about teaching is when you introduce a book to a student. It's exciting when you know they are about to fall in love with either the characters, or the plot and the adventure of the story. I don't want my students to lose their excitement and joy of reading. Not having access to a library, not having access to books are one of many unfortunate realities students are facing. In our current circumstances, books are an expense that many parents can't spare.

I don't want my students only experience with distance learning to be one of face masks, standing 6 ft apart, being away from loved ones, and staring at a computer all day.

I want them to think of this time as one where they read something so good that they could not wait to read the next book! Do you remember the first time you read Harry Potter? Do you remember being taken to a different place and not wanting the adventure to end? That is what these books will do for my students. Getting lost in a good book, there is no bigger adventure than that! I want my students to be able to read anytime, anywhere. I chose books from a variety of genres from fantasy to historical fiction, to nonfiction, and more. Students will be able to choose which book to start their next adventure. In my ideal world, every home has a huge library with books as far as the eye can see, until that dream is a reality, we can start by giving them a simple book. A book that can take their minds away from their current circumstances, to a world with unlimited possibilities. That is what your donation will give, unlimited possibilities through a book.
