My students are some of the most unique individuals in the school building. Each of my students is diagnosed with autism, and each works hard to reach their goals within the classroom and the whole school environment. Each of my students work on academic, social, communication, daily living, and vocational skills each day. They require unique opportunities to practice the skills they are working so hard to achieve. Of course, no goal is ever reached without frustration. Students with autism require specific items to assist with their difficulties in the area of sensory processing. Occasionally, my students become overwhelmed and frustrated with their tasks, and need a little extra support to manage their emotions and sensory needs.
Students with autism experience the world in a different way than others around them. They need extra assistance to process things like light, sound, and touch. These students often have difficulty with transitions and changes in their schedules. There are several items that can help students manage their sensory overload.
Certain items, such as a weighted blanket, provide comfort and support for students with autism when they are experiencing sensory overload and unable to manage it.
Students can use a weighted blanket for short periods of time to help calm their feelings, so they can return to their work in the classroom.
