I hate outdated textbooks, and so do my students! Everything we've seen forces students to practice filling in bubbles and writing in margins and memorizing facts -- boring! I want my students to be excited about science. What better way than using technology?
Our campus is considered high poverty, with 44% of our student body on free or reduced lunch.
We currently have 34 students who are considered homeless. Our total student body has 1,194 children. Over 60% of our student population is military dependent, with many students having at least one parent deployed overseas. They have faced more challenges in their short years than many adults have in their entire lives.
My Project
Most textbooks that our students are forced to use are at least a decade old with simple pictures that insult anyone of average or above intelligence. They cost thousands of dollars and our outdated before they even arrive on campus. This series of interactive white board lessons that are correlated to the national science strands will bridge the gap between memorizing chains of facts and actually learning concepts. It will also enable my students to retain information since they will be able to connect it with a positive experience.
My students carry so much baggage before they even arrive at the campus doors in the morning: hungry, worried about a parent overseas, older siblings helping to take care of younger ones.
By the time academics come into place, they are exhausted. This series of lessons will relieve some of the pressure and help make learning fun once more.
