Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are smart, creative, hardworking, and eager to learn! Most, but not all, are English learners in the classroom. The students live in a small town near fields where a lot of fruits and vegetables are grown. The school is huge, with more than 700 students. The students are tackling the new Common Core Standards. They want to succeed in school! They are kind, safe, and responsible. The school, like most, is not able to pay for extra supplies.
My Project
I am trying to help our school library receive new books! The school has purchased some new books, but not enough for 700 students from kinder to fifth grades.
The School Librarian has selected several high interest books that students really want to read, and I am hoping you can help this become a reality!
The school that I teach at huge and there are several classes in each grade. Classes visit the library once a week, every week for thirty minutes to hear the School Librarian read a book. Afterwards, students have a chance to browse the selections in the library and are able to check out two books to read both in the classroom and at home.
When new books arrive at the library, then it becomes difficult to check out the books when there are not enough copies. I am requesting multiple copies. The hardback copies also will last longer than the paperbacks.
In the city where my school is located, we have one small city library and no bookstores. The nearest bookstore is over an hour away!
All students use the Accelerated Reader Program. Students check out books based on their reading level. After reading their book, students then take a short AR quiz to see if they understood the book. If they pass the quiz, then students receive AR points. When students reach 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of their AR goal then they are recognized at Accelerated Assemblies infront of their peers and parents.
These high interest books, some that are graphic novels, will help encourage students to read.
