Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students rarely get out of our town. Some have never even been to downtown Denver, let alone other parts of the world. Having the chance to send them to the Museum of Nature and Science, and especially to this Sherlock Holmes exhibit would open their eyes to worlds they have never known.
My students are a mixed crew of 7th and 8th graders from an impoverished neighborhood.
They are an incredibly close-knit bunch who have some of the strongest social bonds I've ever seen in a group of students. They have a huge desire to grow and learn, and just need some opportunities to get out there and do it. They are the leaders of our local K-8 school, and giving them a chance to spread their wings would mean the world to the teachers who help them thrive, as well as the students themselves.
My Project
My students will develop their ability to form inferences and use deductive reasoning, by reading about Sherlock Holmes, and seeing this special museum exhibit. The exhibit allows the students to practice their "CSI" skills, while deducing what happened in a crime scene - much as I teach them to deduce what certain words mean or what may happen later in a text from clues within the books they read. This exhibit and accompanying activities will bring these lessons to life in a way I just couldn't do in the classroom alone.
My students need their eyes opened to the fact that there is more to life than their neighborhoods.
Seeing how skills we teach them here really do make a difference in the real world would bring their learning home in a truly meaningful way, and help prepare them for when they are able to go out and make their own way in the world. We try to help our students become well-rounded critical thinkers, and this trip would be an excellent step on that path.
