My students need sturdy shelving and storage for an "Independent Work" station. Students will take a work-bin off the shelf and complete the task by themselves, teaching them independence, following written/picture instructions, and perseverance.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I've dedicated my teaching career to working with students with "moderate to severe" developmental disabilities. Many of my current students have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down's Syndrome, or Intellectual Disabilities. My class currently supports 11 students, some of whom have assigned 1:1 aides to help them be safe and successful at school.

This is an amazing group of special education students, each with their own talents, strengths, and challenges, and it's my job to find ways to engage and motivate them to excel.

Special education students need a higher level of organization and structure, and access to a primarily hands-on, flexible learning curriculum and environment.

My Project

My students need to work on increasing their independence and ability to complete a task without direct adult prompting. An independent work station involves supplying the students with "task boxes" that are arranged on a shelf. The student goes over to the work station, pulls out the correct task box, and completes the work by themselves. Sturdy shelving is needed to hold all these task boxes! Students need to be able to access them easily and without having to move around other supplies.

These sturdy shelves allow the students to access their independent work boxes easily and help keep the area organized so they can focus on success!
