The majority of my intermediate level students have learning disabilities. Learning disability often goes hand in hand with frustration, low self-confidence and a default to acting out. Reading is a struggle and a puzzle to many of these students.
Our students come from diverse homes and backgrounds.
Over 80 percent come from low-income households. For many, English is not the primary language spoken in their home.
Families are supportive and want the best for their children, but face language and economic barriers. Many of our students do not have equal access to opportunities available to others.
My Project
The books requested--graphic novels and series books-- are highly motivating to students who struggle with reading. They are high interest, low readability books. Chances are much greater that students with learning disabilities and those who are English language learners will pick up these books and choose reading as a leisure, choice activity. Students who are motivated begin to identify themselves as confident, successful readers!
Books requested are:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (8 bk set)
Pete the Cat (6 bk set)
Junie B. Jones (27 bk set)
The Magic School Bus (13 bk set)
Nate the Great (25 bk set)
The Magic Tree House: Without Research Guides (28 bk set)
Big Nate (6 bk set)
Bone (9 bk set)
Lunch Lady (4 bk set)
Judy Blume (11 bk set)
Because many of our students do not have books at home, or the opportunity to visit libraries, it is imperative that they have access to read and learn from these high interest books at school.
