I currently host, along with another teacher, Sheiko’s Project LIT Book Club whose purpose is to engage students in culturally relevant books while fostering a love of reading. The goal is for students to see themselves in the characters (mirrors), experience new cultures (windows), and step into the lives of characters and their experiences (sliding doors).
Sheiko's LIT Book Club includes students in grades 4 & 5 providing them experiences where they have voice and choice while learning what it means to be a collaborator, communicator, contributor, and
critical thinker. The students are culturally diverse as well as academically. They all share a love of reading and/or a desire to become stronger readers. What better way to become a better reader than to have a book of high interest that you can have a deep conversation about? The enthusiasm that students have for sharing their reading is contagious and will definitely help grow the book club's membership. The students are anxiously awaiting the next book choice and begin reading. The purchase of books is a luxury many of the students simply cannot afford.
My Project
Students will participate in an afterschool book club utilizing the books funded through this project.
As educators, it is our responsibility to ensure students have experiences where they have voice and choice while learning what it means to be a collaborator, communicator, contributor, and critical thinker (4Cs).
Ultimately, the purpose of Sheiko’s Project LIT Book Club is to engage students in culturally relevant books while fostering a love of reading.
The book club will meet monthly. The goal is for students to want to be a part of this club and ultimately continue to grow their love of reading, become social justice advocates, in conjunction with living the 4Cs.
