My students come from diverse backgrounds (95% minority), yet they are unified in the pursuit of musical excellence. Music class provides a safe community for creative, emotional, and social opportunities. Students learn employable skills like goal-setting, teamwork, and responsibility through ensemble while making lifelong friendships!
I teach at a school in central Virginia where 100% of students can receive both free breakfast and free lunch, and about 50% of music students speak English as a second language (current or former ESOL students).
Every year, several of the most dedicated students are selected for honor music ensembles such as the All-County Orchestra and the Central Regional Orchestra. While it is a great honor to be selected for these groups, participation has a price tag. Fortunately, our school works creatively to assure that no student misses out on an educational opportunity due to money, and DonorsChoose.org has been "instrumental" making it happen!
My Project
It takes a lot of hard work to earn the privilege of participation in a select orchestra, but it also takes money to purchase musical selections that students will perform in these groups. While our music library contains some of the selected materials for the 2019 events, we are missing the selections included in this project.
My most dedicated students need specified sheet music to perform in all-county and regional orchestra events.
In addition to performing these pieces in the select orchestra, the entire school orchestra will also encore these pieces on our school concerts. This project has a great variety of repertoire - from film music (The Pink Panther and Final Countdown) to blues (Boogie Man Blues) to classical music (March Militaire) to original compositions for school orchestra (Swords of Evolution and Creatures). Please help me provide these materials for my outstanding orchestra students!
