Sheep Heart Dissections

Help me give my students sheep heart dissection specimens to provide students with a kinesthetic exploration of the anatomy of the heart as well as the blood pathway.

My Students

My students in this class are from widely diverse backgrounds, grade levels, and academic pathways. While my students range from sophomores to seniors, artistic to social justice-driven, they are all bright, empathetic, and curios about the world. When learning about physiological concepts, many of them enjoy thorough investigation and discussion of the capabilities of the human body. Many also learn best through visual, hands-on experiences that are social in nature and allow for collaboration with peers.

Students of all of my physiology classes have also expressed a deep desire to see firsthand what structures of the body look and feel like.

While I can't provide materials for them to dissect a human body, a sheep heart can provide thorough insight into how the human heart is constructed. With deep budget cuts to our district, resources and funding for learning experiences such as dissections is limited and not able to support the wide range of activities needed for student learning.

My Project

Through sheep heart specimens, students will be able to explore the structures of the cardiovascular system through a hands-on, in-depth experience. This exploration is important is understanding how blood flows through the heart to collect and deliver critical nutrients around the body.

Through this dissection, students will observe the external and internal anatomy of the heart in order to critically think about how the form of specific heart structures is deeply related to their functions.

At the conclusion of the dissection, students will continue building their skills in writing a lab report in order to assess the findings of a scientific investigation.
