Our school is located in a small rural community, but our students dream big. Students take chemistry because they want to succeed in the fields of nursing, engineering, astrophysics, dentistry, radiology, pharmacy and medicine, just to name a few. As a chemistry teacher, I want to be able to give them the tools and resources needed to prepare them for college and their chosen profession. These students are excited to learn and constantly challenge me to raise the bar and go in depth on topics. I am so blessed to work with these students.
My Project
This project will supply our physics, chemistry and physical science classrooms with spectrum tubes, a power supply and spectroscopes.
Students will be able to visualize specific and unique color patterns emitted by different elements and compounds.
This technique, called spectroscopy, is widely used to identify the presence of unknown substances at crime scenes, measure levels of compounds in the human body and study stars in our Universe. Through this project, students will be given the opportunity to learn about this concept using a hands on approach.
Science is much easier to understand for students if they are given a real world application and are able to manipulate the material being presented. This project accomplishes both of those objectives and will be a nice enhancement to our science curriculum.
