My Students

My students are sophomores-seniors enrolled in a Journalism course studying everything from the 1st Amendment to media literacy in the digital age while producing a print, digital and multimedia publication. They come to this course with a variety of skills and ability levels, but they share one thing: a love of storytelling. Despite a range of age level, academic ability, and learning differences, the real world writing of journalism and the authentic audience has made them passionate about the power of Journalism as a career path.

They are reporters, reviewers, critics, the Fourth Estate and the future generation of Journalism.

Through Journalism, they engage in a variety of reporting techniques - from writing to editorial cartooning, to podcasting and video production. They seek to tell the stories of their peers, their school, their community, and their world.

My Project

These products will allow the expanding student journalism program to reach the student body of 2200 students and the community beyond. This equipment will literally and figuratively amplify the student journalists' voices and shed light on the work they are doing in the school's three laboratory journalism courses.

Students will be working on the Common Core ELA standards of writing for diverse and authentic audiences, interviewing, storytelling while creating various multimodal texts.

In this creation, the students learn real-world skills such as video editing, audio editing, scene lighting, etc.

Students will leave this course with not only the Journalistic skills of writing, reporting, interviewing, editing, but they will also be exposed to a variety of technical skills, software and hardware - while working collaboratively as a production team!
