SHATTERING Stereotypes with ART, part 1

My students need a glass grinder, soldering irons, and fid tools to work with stained glass.

"Hooligans" and "old people," what a combination!!! Stereotypes are a barrier to communication. I teach middle school art. I am proposing a cumulative art project to bridge the communication between our senior citizens and my 8th grade art students.

Budget cuts = no new items. We have no money for the start up cost of this art project. Students are interested in teaching a skill to others.

We need a glass grinder, soldering guns, and the fid pack to get started. Students will break (cut), grind, foil, and solder the glass pieces to make a suncatcher. Once this is mastered they will then teach these skills to seniors at our local care center.

Our students will benefit from helping seniors and talking with them. It will give them a perspective of who are our seniors and their value to us as a society. The seniors will benefit because some have so few visitors. The interaction will give them a perspective that our young people are caring, wonderful, and contribute to our world. Each will have a memento (suncatcher) of the experience.
