This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Sharpening writing skills! I teach first grade in a high-poverty public school. We write every day and need sharp pencils!

We write a lot everyday in my classroom and we are faced with one frustrating obstacle. Pencils break. I try to keep a good supply of sharpened pencils, but inevitably, by the end of the day, they are gone. I have gone through too many pencil sharpeners to count. The ones I can afford to buy on my own only last a month or two and then slow down and break completely. The school only supplies one at the beginning of the year. I have to go to my teammate's classroom every morning to sharpen all of my pencils because I no longer have a sharpener that works.

The only thing I am asking for is a good, quality pencil sharpener that will hopefully last a long time. My students will be very grateful!

My first graders love to write. They like to make books, write letters to family members, and write stories. A new pencil sharpener will help them immensely.
