Each day my students start the day by sharpening pencils. Since August this seemingly easy task has become more difficult as the days go by. We have an old crank pencil sharpener and it eats the student's pencils to nothing. My students get so upset when they go to sharpen a new pencil and it won't sharpen. Some days the line gets so long at the pencil sharpener, that I sharpen pencils. By the time you've sharpened two to three pencils for about 20 students, you can only imagine how tired my hands are and so are theirs. It also gets messy because our sharpener is mounted on a wall and we have to make sure that there is always a trashcan under it to catch the shavings. We are also in need of pencils and erasers for the students. Pencils are something we use every minute of the day and many students come to school without the proper school supplies. Many are from low income and single parent families and can't always afford extra supplies. They buy supplies at the beginning of the year, but of course they never last the entire year. My class would really appreciate some electric pencil sharpeners, pencils and erasers to last until the end of the year. I would like to have these items readily available so we could set up supply stations around the room for use whenever things were needed.
