This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

If you ever had the experience of 23 students jumbling towards a manual pencil sharpener, you know the importance of having a great electric sharpener. I’m a fourth grade English Language Arts teacher. I teach 2 classes of 23 students in a low socio- economic area.

My students really enjoy the creativity they are able to express in their writing. I love laughing at their stories and beam with pride when their compositions are especially good. However, to get a great story you must have sharpened pencils! A sharpened pencil with a clean sheet of paper goes together like peanut butter and jelly on bread. Unfortunately, the school year isn’t over and I’ve replaced the electric sharpener twice. I always have students act as if they can’t possibly write unless their pencil lead is razor sharp! So of course I have students who are constantly at the sharpener for a significant amount of class time.

That is why a powerful, heavy duty pencil sharpener would greatly benefit my class. This donation would save major amounts of wasted class time and help prevent students from “hanging out” at the pencil sharpener. Also, a high powered sharpener would last so much longer.

Who knows, with a sharpened pencil in hand, the next editor and chief may come from my class!
