As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges in school and outside of school. Many are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Despite this, they still come to the classroom often with a smile, eagerly anticipating "What are we drawing today?"
The students I work with are direct, active, require positive encouragement, clever, and genuinely want to succeed.
I want my kids to feel welcomed, noticed, validated and celebrated when they come into my classroom, regardless of their interest in art or what their life outside of school looks like.
The way my classroom is set up, all students have a bin of supplies at their table. The colored pencils are a favorite but only when they work!
Having handheld pencil sharpeners will help my students be able to spend time creating art, not waste time asking me to sharpen the pencils for them.
The ones I have from this year are mostly broken, and a cheaper quality. Colored pencils are a favorite in my classroom. But kids quickly become frustrated when pencils are broken or not sharp enough to use. I’m not able to sharpen pencils in between each of my seven classes a day.
