Sharpener That Doesn't Sound Like a Machine Gun and Works
My students need 2 pencil sharpeners, that work quietly, and a math game about real world money. I could use staple removers that do not bend and break when removing staples.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
K-bang,k-bangangang! That loud annoying sound drives my students and me crazy each and every day, because daily students really need a sharp pencil in my class. It is worse, when a student tries to get that sharp pencil and they can't even get any kind of point.
Our class is classified as "high-risk" due to the fact that more than 80% of our students receive free lunch at our Pre-K -4th public elementary school in a Texas urban center.
Resources like pencils can be hard to come by and therefore it is critical that we use what we have to the fullest, especially pencils. My students are desperately eager to learn and show what they know, which most of the time involves putting it on paper. Please support our class by providing a sharpener that quietly gets the job done.
My Project
Students will be able to quickly sharpen their pencils and return to their seats unnoticed by me or their classmates. They will feel like they are ready to begin or finish any tasks, since most of my students want to do their work to begin with. Now they can clearly show me what they know by using a writing instrument that writes neatly. As I always tell them, put your name on your paper, be proud of your work. Now they will be proud with writing that is as clear as their thoughts.
The money game is not just a game but is obviously real life. They already use money as they buy their snacks or supplies from the school store. In class we talk about the importance of knowing our money, so as not to get cheated by someone wiser than us.
A working pencil sharpener--such a simple request, right?
This simple thing would make instruction flow more seamlessly in my class, and would ensure that students are using their pencils more than worrying about getting them sharpened, not to mention what they are missing while they sit with a broken pencil! Sometimes table partners just don't have extra pencils to loan and unfortunately neither do I. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and for supporting DonorsChoose.
