It's as simple as sharpening a pencil!
I teach math, language arts, science, art, social skills, and everything else that goes along with second grade. The school I work at is located in the city and in the middle of a low income area. We are a Title One school and our students come from a low socioeconomic background. We are a very diverse community and have several students who are English Language Learners and need labels to help them identify things with a picture. There is little parent involvement and any little bit helps!
My students continuously need a sharpened pencil. I have tried the small ones that they can keep in their desk but they become a distraction and do not work well at all. They have been in another teacher’s classroom that has a nice pencil sharpener and always talk about how cool it would be to have one in our room. This is one of their ideas and I hope to fulfill their needs with your help.
This pencil sharpener, pencils, and labels will make everyone in our classroom have a smoother day. My students are constantly needing a pencil, or are getting up to empty their own personal pencil sharpener and this takes away from instructional time and distracts other students. The labels will also help my students who speak English as a second language become more comfortable with where things are in the classroom. These items will save my students, my assistant, and me a ton of headaches. It seems simple, but using a pencil sharpener that doesn't work is very frustrating.
With your help, my students will be able to become more independent and responsible for their own materials. Responsibility is a big focus in second grade and I hope with your help that my students can leave my classroom with more of it. The items needed will make a tremendous effect on the way our classroom runs and will relieve stresses on my students and myself.
