Mr. Holmes from Snellville GA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need the following items in order to keep learning flowing in the classroom: pencils, paper, expo markers, and a pencil sharpener that works.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
It's hard to do the work without the right tools. My students are running out of some of schools basic needs.
I teach twenty two third graders at a title one school.
As a teacher I love the fun and excitement each day brings with the students. They come in each day with bright smiling faces ready to give it their all. Nearly 90% of my students receive free and reduced lunch, and struggle to get the basic school supplies they need. As a result I spend more and more to accommodate their growing needs.
Have you every tried to sharpen a pencil only to see it vanish in front of your eyes? Well this is a daily occurrence in third grade. With this proposal my students will have plenty of the basic school supplies they'll need to finish out the year. (paper, pencils, and markers) We will then be able to have sharpened pencils ready and waiting for the every looming "My pencil broke!" This alone will cut down on additional trips to the sharpener thus putting the focus on their work, not the pencil.
Every lesson of everyday students in my classroom make the pilgrimage to the pencil sharpener.
Not only does this disrupt the other students but it has taking a toll on my fingers, since I'm the one doing most of the sharpening. We have used three different manual sharpeners, all of which last a couple of months. I want to spend my time teaching not worrying about sharpening pencils throughout the day.
