Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I remember my early experiences at a library. The excitement of an infinite amount of books and selecting a book I truly wanted to read. I hope to instill this excitement in my students by offering award winning books to read and sharpened pencils to practice their literacy and research skills!

There are almost 2,000 students in our K-5 school.

I am lucky to work with an extremely diverse student population with multiple languages and cultures represented. However, these students are from low-income families who do not have the resources that I was fortunate to grow up with. When students come to library their excitement can barely be contained. We have a newer library that students visit twice a month. It is a special treat to visit. Since our students don't have many nice books at home, they truly appreciate their library. The wide-eyed, look of awe is priceless, as they step in and get to select their own books. It is something I want to foster. My students have a want to be in the library that is special and with their own school supplies and award winning books I can continue to develop their passion for the library and reading.

My Project

Students come to library to explore different genres and new titles. My students are always on the look out for new books. The popular and award-winning titles, that I have requested, will grab their attention! Additionally, while the students are in library we learn literacy and research skills. We do plenty of assignments that exercise their writing skills. I have almost 2,000 students sharing the same pencils. They would be happy to receive new pencils that they could sharpen themselves! Using these pencils I want students to work on writing book reviews and book recommendations. This way they can share what they have read with others and show off what they have learned in a fun, creative activity. I can then put them on display and students can learn of the books their friends read and they may like to read too.

These award-winning book titles, pencils and sharpeners are a few simple, but essential classroom supplies that can positively influence students to take advantage of the library.

The books will immediately engage students in reading and further develop their habit of reading. When students start an enjoyment and habit of reading early on, they will more likely continue it in the future. This will directly affect their progress with reading stamina, rate, comprehension and vocabulary.
