Help me give my students the necessary basics to make it through the school year. Pencils and glue sticks are used numerous times a week and our supply is depleted very quickly.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a diverse mix of 5 and 6-year-old 1st graders who are learning to read, write, and do math in two languages.
Our school is in an economically disadvantaged area in Houston, Texas.
Most of my students meet the low-income qualifications for free or reduced-price lunch and are barely getting their basic needs met. Our school has reached out to the community for support and is receiving an abundance of help. Unfortunately, the help that is given is for items of necessity, (food, clothing, school supplies) and not much excess.
Although the parents provide supplies at the beginning of the school year, the resources still remain limited.
My Project
As a 1st-grade Dual Language teacher, I have to rely on hands-on activities and manipulatives to convey the content of my lessons. My students do a lot of writing, drawing, cutting and pasting to demonstrate that they have mastered the lesson that was taught.
Keeping pencils sharp will ensure that the students have the resources needed to sharpen their minds.
Although some of my students struggle to speak English, they are very competent when it comes to demonstrating their comprehension.
Adding a nice pencil sharpener, along with an abundance of pencils and glue to our classroom will give my students what they need to show what they know.
