My Students

My students are part of a family in our Cedar Rapids elementary school. They are the light of our lives. People are what make a school and our "people" work tirelessly to meet the academic and emotional needs of the kids. We are all teachers in my building.

All students in our school receive free lunch and many gain access to necessary clothing or hygiene items through our building outreach efforts.

Our school is not only a Title I school, but maintains an English Language Learner population that nears 30%.

My Project

We are requesting books whose characters are like my students. Students love to hear a good book. They especially love to hear a good book with characters that look like them starring in the book. Students grow more when they see themselves in content throughout the day. Students have access to classroom library books throughout the day and always enjoy a modern book. After these quality read aloud books have been read, they enter our library.

Students also use pencils throughout the day so we need a sturdy pencil sharpener.

In order to teach students that "Pencils are our friends," I start the year with a lesson on respecting our things. I give each student a nice pencil and charge them with making it last as long as they can. Students will learn to treat pencils kindly and in turn have just a little more recent for our learning space.
