My students need STEM activities to engage them in the classroom. We will use the solar powered race cars to discuss solar power and also focus on measuring the distance each car travels.
I work in a Title I School and we are located in a high poverty area of the district. Over 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. On a daily basis we are working to help our students learn while overcoming obstacles such as language, hunger, and home life issues.
Tell me and I forget; Teach me and I remember; Involve me and I learn.
This is the most powerful approach that I try to implement in my classroom. I want to create a math classroom that engages students and challenges their minds.
Many of our students have not left the boundaries of town. Our students have limited experience to the outside world. Our school district recognizes this and is investing in the future of our students. Next year, our school will become a STEM school focused on Biomedical Science, Computer Science, and Engineering Design. This is a huge opportunity to allow students to see the opportunities that will exist if they work hard.
This year I have been chosen to pilot a 2nd and 3rd grade robotics and engineering club. This is an exciting opportunity to expose young minds to the world of robotics. The great opportunity is that I can use these materials not just in my after school club but also in my daily classroom.
We will be building solar powered cars, racing them, measuring the distance that each car travels, and graphing the results.
This will allow us an awesome opportunity to integrate every pillar of STEM.
The SCIENCE will focus on solar energy which is incorporated in our study of the sun and its impact on our place. The TECHNOLOGY will focus on building tools that integrate solar energy and will work. The ENGINEERING will focus on reading diagrams to ensure that we are building correctly and problem solving if we don't. The MATH will focus on measurement and graphing of our results.
These materials will help students truly understand every element of STEM and apply knowledge in activities outside the classroom.
