Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Andre and Devon are two of my most dedicated students to our outdoor club. They have been on a major camping trip before and decided the club could use several updates. We have used DC before, and they were excited to have a chance to work with them again!
This idea was brought to my attention after our last weekend hiking trip to a State Park in Texas. The boys from our club realized that with a group set of supplies, we would be able to open our club to students that might not have all the supplies to join us.
The students in my club have spearheaded an effort to find materials that can help bring people out to trips, and keep them coming back, and essentially telling other people about their experience. Creating and working on this project the kids in our club have tested out materials, had to work as a team to decided on what they wanted, they used great communication skills to ask other campers to test out their materials, and ask what they felt would be the best things to get. The kids also had a budget to work with which made them focus on what would really help their club out.
In Their Own Words
Our idea is to share the outdoors with others. It might sound like a super easy project, just take kids outside, we wish it was. We realized that many kids would like to, but sometimes they don't always have enough money to buy the needed supplies. We decided to cut out the money issue and try out Donor's Choose.
Our teacher does a really good job of keeping us up-to-date with what is going on in our club, but this time we are trying to do him one better. When we are out hiking, our teachers are just making sure we don't get hurt. This time we are planning our trips, finding our supplies, this is going to help us prepare for doing trips on our own, with our families and other friends.
This project is very important to us and our community. We have had an amazing chance to go to Glacier National Park last year, and it opened our eyes to so much beauty, and career possibilities. All of that would not have happened if we stayed home those two weeks. We want more students to have that chance to change their lives. We want everyone to have an eye opening experience that changes the way they see themselves and the world we live in. Ever child deserves to look up and see the stars.
