My students need leveled Sight-Word Readers, Picture Book Read-Along Sets, Magnet Letter Builders, Sight-Word Daily Activity Journals, Phonics Interactive Journals and Flexible Seating to support them at different stages as they are learning to read.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a small STEM focused Title 1 Charter School in Orlando, FL. We focus on growing the whole child and meeting the needs of each student, even outside of academics. My class currently consists of 18 students, between the ages of 5 and 6.
My kindergarteners are a group of children who constantly remind of me why I joined this profession.
Their favorite part of every day is learning new and unfamiliar vocabulary words. Recently I had a student inform me that their little brother was being a "nuisance" to them before school. My students refer to me as their "school mom" and we have developed a beautiful classroom family, made up of laughter and love. Their love for learning, keeps me on my toes, as I am constantly thinking of new and exciting thing to do in the classroom.
My Project
Each morning for an hour our class participates in Daily 5, where the students work independently on different reading skills when I work with small groups. Reading is one of the most important skills my students can master while they are in my class, as they will need it do be successful in nearly every other subject.
My students will use the Sight Word Readers to build their confidence and reading stamina, once they begin to master sight words.
My students will use the Sight Word Flash Cards to practice their sight words in pairs, allowing one another to quiz and grow from each other. When they use The Picture Book Read Alongs, they will be able to independently "read"/follow along with books they enjoy, but are above their reading level. The Wooble Chairs, Comfy Floor Seats and Soft Seats will be used for flexible seating during this time to promote independent reading.
