I have a fabulous group of first graders who are eager and excited to learn every day. Our school is a Title I school, with 75% of our students receiving free/reduced lunch. We are surrounded by a vibrant neighborhood community that is very supportive of our educational efforts and helps our students in many ways.
Many of my students do not have access to technology at home, so using computers and iPads in the classroom truly enriches their learning experience.
Integrating technology into our classroom is not only motivating for my students, it also provides an opportunity for them to develop the skills needed to be successful throughout their lives.
My Project
Having a dedicated iPad in our classroom will enable my kiddos to document their fabulous work and explain their thinking and learning. We use an app called Seesaw to upload pictures, videos, and drawings of students' completed work to be reviewed first by me, then shared with the class and the students' families. By involving parents and allowing them to view their child's uploaded work, they feel much more connected to what is happening in the classroom.
It is amazing to see how successful a student feels when they are able to document and share their learning with their classmates and families.
Hearing a student explain what math strategy they used and why, or reading an original story they have written allows me to more deeply understand their thinking and learning. This also provides me with a portfolio of the ongoing documentation of the skills they have mastered and evidence of their academic growth. The iPad I am requesting would be dedicated for students to use to document and upload their work, freeing up our existing four iPads to be used in our math and literacy station activities.
