Help me give my students the experience of working with quality art paper and drawing supplies for a special art unit related to African American History Month and social justice.
M. Elementary School is a Title 1 school in MI. We serve students in grades K-5 as well as an early childhood program including Preschool and Young 5's classes. Our students come from a variety of economic backgrounds and over 65% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We are one of the most diverse elementary schools in the state of Michigan, serving students of all races and cultures. Our families come from many areas of the world, some of them speaking different languages.
Recently we have been officially named an International Baccalaureate World School, which means we use inquiry to drive our instruction, as well as teach students about what it means to be global citizens.
IB schools approach students as "the whole child" promoting individual traits such as being caring, open mindedness, communicating, and being principled. We encourage students asking questions about the world, and seeking answers through their learning.
Our Program of Inquiry includes visual arts, music, media, physical education, and world language program teaching Spanish and Arabic. We also partner with community organizations such as The University of Michigan and Community Action Network to help serve our students with the highest needs.
My Project
As part of a unit related to social justice, and in honor of African American History Month, Mitchell students will explore the songs, history and messages, as well as artwork from the Motown era. We will create works of art inspired by hit Motown songs as we learn about how Motown artists overcame adversity to share their voice and culture through music.
Some of our big themes are artists using their voice to create positive change, respecting others in the world, and overcoming obstacles in our lives.
These drawing supplies and quality art paper will bring our art to the next level, and afford us an experience working with tools we can not access otherwise.
We are excited to share our artwork in a school art show on National African American Parent Involvement Day, along with our music concert!
