Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sixth grade students call themselves the Barrier Breakers. They have learned to overcome obstacles as they set and reach their academic goals. They live in a working class community in Southern California. Some of my students are English language learners. Others have special needs. One thing they have in common is that they are determined to excel against all odds. They break barriers!
They are enthusiastic about learning.
They work hard and seek help when they need it. Our goal is to ensure that we equip them with the skills and tools they need to succeed.
My Project
My students work in cooperative learning groups to complete many assignments. During a unit of study in Reading, Health, Science, or History, they are often required to give a presentation about what they learned. They need presentation materials to complete their tasks.
The students share their learning in various ways.
They create vibrant posters using self-stick wall pads, markers, and colored paper. During their presentations, they teach their classmates how to complete a foldable to organize their learning. Foldables are 3-D student made interactive graphic organizers based upon a skill. Making foldables gives students a fast kinesthetic activity to help them retain information.
