I teach first grade in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I work with English Language learners. The children are learning to read and write as they learn English. It is a very exciting time. The children have begun writing about themselves. It's an amazing process to see their scribblings turn into letters, letters grow into words and words grow into sentences. It often saddens me when I see a story a child has toiled over for days all crumpled in his book bag or torn and buried deep in her desk. I would like to create a writing center where children can take their finished products and publish them. I would like laminating pouches and card stock to protect their stories. I would like paper and markers so children can create covers to illustrate the big idea of their writing. I believe by binding the children's work and giving it a sense of permanence the children will believe they are authors. Children often go through the steps of writing without fully appreciating the final most precious step which is the sharing. I would like the children to have their writing bound and durable enough to be read by everyone and to travel home to be shared. The children deserve a finished piece of writing that represents the effort and care given by some very special young authors.
