Do you remember your experience in high school math? My students range from LOVING it to unfortunately dreading it. They are a diverse mix of students at this urban high school and I'm hoping to get them even more excited about learning algebra, and sharing and discovering new problem solving strategies.
They have a diverse set of mathematical abilities and I'm hoping to give them opportunities to share their strengths and strategies with each other.
Math can be an emotional/fearful subject, but I'm hoping to help them find more confidence in themselves this year!
My Project
Sharing problem solving strategies is a KEY component of modern math classrooms. Also, flexibility of my physical location when teaching will help with students' focus, and change the classroom environment from me being stuck at the front of the room, to me being able to walk around during instruction.
My hope is to use an iPad to give instruction (instead of a whiteboard) and project through the Apple TV to be able to have more flexibility to move around the room.
Also, I’m hoping to give students the opportunity to show their problem solving strategies to the other students in class by writing out their strategy on the iPad or taking a picture of it and projecting it too. My students are noticeably more engaged and less disruptive when they feel confident about their mathematical abilities. I'm hoping to increase this engagement, confidence, and focus in my classroom with the use of these materials.
