Jaida S. is a senior. She is one of the students from our Teen Advisory Board in the library that helped come up with this project idea. She is currently working on college applications, but finds it difficult to work from home due to conditions caused from Hurricane Harvey.
Arnav T. is also a senior. He aspires to be lead propulsion systems engineer for NASA. He would like to pursue a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering following an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is constantly working toward his goals in the library.
Many of our students are just like Jaida and Arnav; they are extremely hard working and want better futures. However, many have experienced hardships due to Hurricane Harvey. While some students were extremely lucky and were unaffected, others lost everything and are still rebuilding their home lives.
With 8 Chromebooks available to students for check out, students will be able to complete academic work outside of school, regardless of their socio-economic or post - Hurricane Harvey position.
Students will be able to check out laptops to collaborate on group projects. Oftentimes, teachers will allow students to bring their own laptops to work on a project. With these Chromebooks, students without laptops will be able to participate by borrowing one.
In Their Own Words
Areej M., 16, Junior: I would like to help the kids who lost most of their valuables in the devastation of Hurricane Harvey by giving them a chance to check out a Chromebook from the library. Sometimes they don't have access to the library for homework and they don't have a computer at home. If we had Chromebooks for them to borrow, they could have this resource for home and school.
I will organize a team of other students so we can make advertisements for the Chromebooks available for them to check out. I will talk to teachers to get them involved in helping connect students in need with these new Chromebooks. I will learn how to coordinate a school-wide project.
Hurricane Harvey has left an impact in Texas and our community. We wish to help those who are still rebuilding and struggling with the after effects.
There are kids who have lost everything and don't have access to a computer at home. If we could get Chromebooks for them to check out, they would be able to work at home.
