Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students LOVE reading! Unfortunately, as a first-year teacher, I do not have the money or resources to supply the students with a large variety of books for our classroom library. I would love to be able to give them new books that they can borrow and use to expand their love of reading!
My students come from low-income households and very diverse families.
We have a high percentage of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students. Most of the school is on free or reduced lunches. School is often a safe place for these students, and they truly enjoy coming each and every day! The school offers a safe and nurturing learning environment for the students. The dedicated staff goes above and beyond their duties to make sure that all students are receiving the best possible education!
My Project
The students look most forward to independent reading time each day. They love to grab their book and head to the carpet to enjoy some "alone" time with the characters they have encountered through reading. These resources would allow me to expand the classroom library so that the students had more books available to them to expand their reading. I have seen great improvements over the year in students' reading levels, and I hope to continue to see that improvement. These leveled readers will help the students find a new book based on their level quickly so that they can dive right in to a new adventure!
Reading is often an escape for my students.
Most of them do not have access to their own books at home or are unable to get to the public library to check out books. Having a large variety of books that the students would have access too would help to instill the importance of reading and continue to grow their love of reading!
