On a typical day in our classroom, we strive for effective and enjoyable teaching. We believe in hands-on learning to develop literacy, mathematical thinking, concepts of science and social skills, and creativity. Our goal for the end of the year is that our children are confident and knowledgeable.
The majority of our students come from low income homes, but they are eager, nonetheless, to learn.
Many teachers shy away from teaching kindergarten, but it is truly the most rewarding grade. The students' brains are like little sponges, and they soak up so much information. Our school is filled with positive teachers who all work hard to provide each child with an equal learning opportunity, but we cannot deny the fact that we are limited in resources and supplies. Our school acknowledges the fact that some of our children do not have the most loving home environments, but we all strive to provide affection, understanding, and equal learning opportunities for all of our students.
My Project
We are asking for copy paper so that we can provide learning opportunities that extend beyond using "boring" textbooks and workbooks. There are so many free resource activities for our objectives on the Internet, but the lack of paper makes it hard for us to use them. We will also use copy paper and ink to provide our students opportunities to learn how to use a computer and be able to print out their work. We are asking for index cards and cardstock to be able to make flash cards and center games. This will allow students to practice their skills in a fun way as well as have flash cards for studying letters and sight words at home. We are asking for dry erase markers for students to use with the class set of marker boards to practice handwriting. This is also something different from the typical pencil and paper that the children dread! These materials will be used during various subject areas and will help make our learning more fun!
I teach in an area where we have a majority of low income families.
We are limited in what we can ask parents to provide, but we refuse to limit their education due to the lack of supplies. These supplies that we are asking for would help us to provide these students with a more enjoyable and effective way of learning. Too often, students dread coming to school, and they are dropping out at increasing rates. The love of school begins with us in kindergarten, so we appreciate all of your help!
