My students need Twisteez, Grafix Shrink Film, and art supplies to create original sculptures of their own while learning about math, science, and engineering.
Art helps students develop the skills needed to become successful learners across curricular areas: creative problem solving, effective communication skills, collaboration, and perseverance.
Our students need more ART supplies for their Monday Makers experience.
These students learn best in a nontraditional setting with hands-on, inquiry based projects. Most of our students learn effectively through creative projects such as sculpture and drawing.
Some of our students have difficulties learning in the conventional classroom setting due to behavior challenges and some have specific learning disabilities. Monday Makers is a place where our students can feel safe and comfortable as they experience the freedom to create, build, invent, and develop important life skills such as problem solving and collaboration.
The students who will benefit from this makerspace come from diverse backgrounds and learn best from hands-on learning, but don't have access outside of school to try many of the activities which will be available at Monday Makers.
Monday Makers is facilitated by volunteer teachers as well as high school and community mentors.
My Project
Students will use the Grafix Shrink Film to create sculptures similar to those by Dale Chihuly. Students will be asked, "How could you make that type of sculpture with these materials?" They will plan their project collaboratively.
Geometry, change in matter, and mathematical reasoning will be part of the experience as students create their sculptures. After creating a group sculpture students will discuss with team members how the project could be changed to reach their desired vision. Students will be allowed to use their analysis to create again!
The wire, blocks, and beads will be used by students as they create their own wire sculptures based on Alexander Calder's work. Students will be asked the same question as above. Engineering and math concepts will be strengthened as students help each other create, analyze, and recreate their sculptures.
All students will share their project with their group, mentors and homeroom. Sculptures will also be on display in the library.
One of Gardner's eight intelligences is spatial intelligence, which involves learning and exploring through the use of the visual arts.
With these art supplies, our students will be given the opportunity to be creative, as well as be encouraged to use critical thinking skills related to math and science. By working in small groups, students will learn and practice the skills of communication and collaboration.
These supplies will help us create meaningful inquiry-based learning activities.
