Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a group of active, knowledge seeking, 5th graders. My students enjoy exploring, learning, and creating! Many of the students come from low-income families and are faced with many challenges.
Regardless of the challenges my students face, they come to school motivated to do their best daily.
This isn't always easy as some students live in violent neighborhoods. Too many of my students come to school with first-hand knowledge of the effects that gang life has on a family/community.
Our school is located in a rural, agricultural valley. We serve students from Kinder through 5th grade. We are proud of what our students have accomplished and know the heights of their abilities. The staff, parents, and students are determined to rise to their true potential.
My Project
Remember coming into a class as a child and having to get to work? Years ago I gave up doing 'Morning Work' and allowed my students to play board games. Things have never been better!
My students begin the day by talking to one another, strategizing, and connecting.
With our students constantly connected, it's nice to have them begin the day with no technology. This is what I call a 'soft start'. It allows my students to ease into the day and catch up with one another.
After doing this for several years, my existing board games are missing pieces and in need of replacement.
