Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want to expose, inspire, and challenge my GATE identified 8th grade students with Shakespeare. I teach English to and high performing group of students who are begging for a challenge. The area in which I teach is a high-poverty, Title I public school.
Although these students come from meager beginnings in a community that sees little value in Shakespeare, they have been chomping at the bit to unleash their creative juices with "Shakespearean Idol".
My students will need 33 copies of Shakespeare Made Easy to introduce each portion of Hamlet in a comprehensible fashion at their reading level. They will then need 33 copies of Shakespeare's original Hamlet. These pieces will be used after the introductory reading of each section to give students the opportunity to read the literature as is was originally written. The 1 copy of the Teacher's Guide to Hamlet will allow for lessons to accompany this literature unit. After completing an in class reading of Hamlet, the students will be broken into groups and issued individual copies made from the classroom copy of Shakespeare Shorts Readers Theater, giving them an opportunity to put their skills to good use performing in "Shakespearean Idol".
Your help will ensure that my students be given the opportunity to perform their skills as Gifted And Talented students. This exposure to literature from a genre that holds such negative connotations, will provide development in the areas of culture, literacy, fluency, historical fiction, artistic expression, teamwork, and presentation skills. This truly is a comprehensive, cross-curricular, thematic unit, a teaching strategy that is missing in my school district due to such a strict focus on the core subjects.
